The St. Mary's Enterprise began publication in 1883 and ceased October 24, 1947 [v. 60, no. 34]. It was published weekly. Title history based on December 8, 1883 [v. 1, no. 37]. It was also published as the Saint Mary's Enterprise. The newspaper was continued by the Enterprise (Leonardtown: 1947).
The St. Mary's Enterprise was founded by Enoch B. Abell and Frank N. Holmes as a Republican newspaper. Holmes died in June 1896 and Abell continued to publish the paper until his death on December 13, 1924. B. Kennedy Abell assumed editorial control of the paper until it was bought by Phillip H. Dorsey, Jr. on May 29, 1926.
Archives' collection includes issues for January 17, 1891 [MSA SC 1925-1-36], January 31, 1891 [MSA SC 1925-1-35], February 28, 1891 [MSA SC 1925-1-34], April 18, 1891 [MSA SC 1925-1-37], and January 7, 1911 [MSA SC 1925-1-38] and a copy of issue for October 28, 1882 [MSA SC 1925-1-1].
Issues of this newspaper are from the collection of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. Some of these were deposited by the publisher and others are drawn from the collection of the Honorable Walter I. Dawkins, deposited at the Pratt in 1937.
