Newspaper, Maryland Gazette, and Baltimore General Advertiser
History
(Baltimore: J[ames] Hayes, Jr.)

The Maryland Gazette, and Baltimore General Advertiser began publication September 15, 1778 [v. 4, no. 177] and ceased in 1779[?]. It was published weekly. The newspaper continues Dunlap's Maryland Gazette, or, The Baltimore General Advertiser (Baltimore: 1775).

The Maryland Gazette was a continuation of Dunlap's Maryland Gazette, or, The Baltimore General Advertiser. James Hayes, Jr., who had managed John Dunlap's Baltimore printing office for "upwards of three years past" became publisher of the paper with the issue of September 15, 1778. Hayes ceased publishing in Baltimore and went to Annapolis in 1779 to establish a press there, issuing the Maryland Gazette, and Annapolis Advertiser (Annapolis: 1779).

Archives' collections include issue for September 22, 1787 (MSA SC 1920).
