The American and Commercial Advertiser began publication June 14, 1861 [v. 123, no. 20,209] and ceased December 31, 1869 [v. 137, no. 22, 861]. It was published daily, except Sunday. A triweekly edition was also published. It was also published as the Baltimore American. Other editions include the Baltimore Weekly American (Baltimore: 1855). The newspaper continues the Baltimore American, and Commercial Advertiser (Baltimore: 1857-1861) and was continued by the Baltimore American and Commercial Advertiser (Baltimore: 1870-1883)

Archives' collection includes issues for October 29, 1961 [v. 124, no. 20,325] (MSA SC 4148), February 13, 1862 [v. 125, no. 20,417] (MSA SC 4148), January-December 1862, January 14, 1863 [v. 127, no. 20704] (MSA SC 4148), April 2, 1863 [v. 127, no. 20,771], (MSA SC 4148), January 19, 1864 [v. 129, no. 21,017] (MSA SC 4148), and 1865-1867.
