This is a collection of digital files relating to the practice of landscape architecture as a licensed profession in Maryland. It consists of copies of government records, including the 1971 law that defined the profession and established the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Landscape Architects along with licensure requirements, and newspaper clippings from The Baltimore Sun that report on relevant legislative actions and prominent landscape architects from the 1970s to the early 1990s. There are also independent research documents detailing the history of the profession in the state, authored and compiled by the collection donor, Grace Fielder, along with information on the three members of the inaugural 1971 Board of Examiners—Jack Daft, Spencer Ellis, and Edward Kilduff III—and other Maryland-based landscape architects who have been elevated as Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). There are also photographs from the 2022 Annual Awards Gala and 50th Anniversary of the Maryland Chapter of the ASLA.
This collection was donated by Grace Fielder, a licensed architect and the President and Principal Designer for Grace E. Fielder & Associates. Fielder is an ASLA Fellow and serves on the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Landscape Architects. She has been committed to advancing the practice of landscape architecture for over 50 years. This collection represents her efforts to document the history of landscape architecture in Maryland and the people who have most shaped the profession.
