Map and coast chart, "Maryland in Liberia" This map and chart of the briefly independent colony of Maryland in the republic of Liberia, Africa. Cartography by William F. Lynch, a U.S. Naval officer who led an exploratory mission to explore sites for further colonization in West Africa.
