Embroidery by Mary Trew (1789-1842) of Providence Plantation in Kent County, Maryland, created while attending the ‘Southern Boarding School’ at Duck Creek Crossing (now Smyrna) Delaware, in silk thread on linen of Quaker design with a depiction of a wreath framing text: “Mary Trew Daughter; of William & Mary Trew; Was born the 28th of the; 2nd Month 1790; Southern Boarding; School 8th Month, 12th 1801; Be this and ev[e]ry future day; Still wiser than the past; That lit’s improvement to survey; May well sustain my last; Let modesty and truth; Adorn the years of youth”, flanked by depiction of floral sprigs and a pair of birds, measuring 12 1/8” X 11 9/16” X 1” inches (framed)
