Calendars of the Maryland State Papers published by the Maryland State Archives containin abstracts of documents in the Rainbow Series of bound documents (Red, Blue, Brown, and Black books). In searchable pdf format, best viewed with Adobe Acrobat viewer, 6.0 or better. These are large (250 meg average) files and will take time to load depending upon the internet connection speed

The first item level indexes produced by the Maryland State Archives (then known as the Maryland Hall of Records) were called calendars and contained summaries (abstracts) of documents covering the late colonial and revolutionary war era of Maryland history. They were all documents that at one time had been entrusted to the care of the Maryland Historical Society and had been bound into volumes with color leather bindings, hence they were called the 'Rainbow Series.'
