Description
Belva A. Lockwood
MSA SC 3520-15841
In 1880, Belva A. Lockwood became the first woman lawyer admitted to the bar in Maryland. Already a licensed attorney in the District of Columbia, Ms. Lockwood was admitted to the bar of the Frederick County Circuit Court by petition on March 8, 1880. This was not Ms. Lockwood's first attempt to gain bar admission in Maryland, having been denied admission to the bar of the Prince George's County County on October 16, 1878. She was later admitted in Prince George's County on October 12, 1892. Ms. Lockwood's efforts to be admitted in Carroll County in May 1881 were successful, and evidence suggests that she also unsuccessfully sought admission in Charles County in July 1881.
