George Jewell, 73, Claimed By Death

Well-Known Contractor Succumbs at Hospital—Injured Two Weeks Ago.

George Jewell, 73 years old, well known contractor for masonry, of Annapolis, died at the Emergency Hospital yesterday from complication s that developed from an accident which he suffered two weeks ago when he fell down a latter, fracturing three ribs and his collarbone.

Mr. Jewell for many years was a leading contractor and master builder and was engaged on such important projects as Bancroft Hall and other structures of the new Naval Academy more than a quarter century ago. He also had a part in erecting most of the large buildings in Annapolis and vicinity including the annex to the State House. He was also a successful road builder and held many contracts under State supervision during his time.

For many years Mr. Jewell was an active member of the Annapolis Lodge of Odd Fellows, and he also was a charter member of the local Lodge of Elks.

Mr. Jewell was twice married and is survived by his second wife, formerly Mrs. Arabella DeLeon, of Annapolis. His first wife, who died a number of years ago, was Miss Jane Cadell. He is also survived by three brothers, all of whom reside in Annapolis. They are Edward Jewell, Frank Jewell, and Augustus Jewell, and two sisters, Mrs. James Small of Annapolis and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Loose, of Baltimore. Thomas Cadell is a stepson, and there are six grandchildren as follows: William Gilbert, Frank and Charles Cadell, Mrs. Catherine Wirth and Jeanette Cadell.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral which will be held from the later residence in Cedar Park at 3:30 P.M. Saturday. The serviced will be conducted by the Rev. Robert W. H. Weech, pastor of the Calvary M. E. Church, and Rev. Charles R. Curtis, pastor of Trinity M. E. Church, South. Funeral Director John M. Taylor is charged with arrangements. Burial will be in Cedar Bluff Cemetery.

George Jewell Buried Saturday Afternoon in Local Cemetery

The funeral of George Jewell, well-known Annapolitan, who died last Wednesday at the Emergency Hospital, took place at 3:30 o’clock Saturday Afternoon from his residence in Cedar Park, with a large attendance of relatives and friends.

Mr. Jewell, who was 73 years old died of complications that developed from an accident which he suffered over two weeks ago when he fell from a ladder fracturing three ribs and his collarbone.

The funeral service was conducterd by the Rev. Charles R. Curtis, pastor of the Trinity M. E. Church (South), assisted by the Rev. Dr. Robert W. H. Weech, pastor of Calvary M. E. Church.

The following served as pallbearers: Augustus Jewell, Frank Jewell, Harry Jewell, William Sullivan, William Small and James Small.

Internment was in Cedar Bluff Cemetery. John M. Taylor being the director in charge of the funeral.
