All cases should be placed in the historical context of their day, utilizing the newspaper resources that are on line and available at the Pratt Library. Students are encouraged to get a Pratt Library card if they do not have one already.

Images of the Afro American are

1) on line through the Afro's web site, with the same images available through Google's news archives

2) Proquest (a commercial service available for free on the Pratt Library site with a Pratt library card; features only the National Edition)

3) in images that reflect their sequence on the security microfilm scans of the Pratt Library, in the possession of the Maryland State Archives, encompassing the late Baltimore City editions.

The images are presented as they appear on the microfilm without alteration. The image labels reflect the microfilm accessioning assigned by the Maryland State Archives to its security microfilm as part of the on-going cooperative program to preserve master security electronic and microfilm images of newspapers and periodicals relating to Maryland in the permanent electronic archives of the state. They are presented here in an ebook format developed by the State Archivist designed to provide researchers with the ability to transcribe, annotate, and index the images on line in an effort to enhance access and the educational value of the collection. The transcription and editing functions can only be used when the ebook is accessed by an on-line browser (Firefox is recommended) and are restricted to personal, educational, non-commercial use. The image labels may be used as a standard reference citation.

Bill Sleeman provides a very good overview of resources at the Marshall library and will be working with the Seminar beginning February 1.

Students will also be expected to provide biographical sketches of the lawyers and judges as appendices to their papers.
