Copy of form letter from Charlotte O. Woodbury, Historian General of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Louisville, Kentucky, April 25, 1927, requesting materials, memorabilia, and written recollections concerning the Confederacy. These materials were to be forwarded to politician and historian Claude G. Bowers to write a history of Reconstruction.

Description
Letter written after the Battle of Manassas, July 27, 1861 and then added to on August 10, 1861. Copied on November 11, 1863. Most likely from a town near Manassas, Virginia. The author discusses the fathers who were going to Richmond after Battle of Manassas to find their sons. Mr. Willoughby went to look for eldest son William. Dead were Edward Foutaine (sp) and Captain Wickham. Mr. Newton (sp) carried a letter from William Willoughby, which mentions Lee (General). Mentions General Beauregard and his aide and President Davis. Soldiers were Mississippians, Carolinians, and Alabamians. Mr. Ely Meuches (sp) of Congress was a POW. Also mentions Mr. Pryer, Dr. Ray, and the Washington Battery from New Orleans.

Typed copy with handwritten additions of “A True Account of the Arrest of Col. John Henry Waring and His Family at Bald Eagle, Prince George’s County” by Julia V. Waring Bowie. Bald Eagle originally called Washburn’s Rest. The recollection is of the family’s capture and journey and then release from Point Lookout which happened sometime after 1862. Author’s mother was daughter of Judge W. D. D. Worthington. Also mentioned are Mssrs. Gustave Lurman, George Elder, John Post, Mrs. Izzard from S.C., as well as Mr. Sam Sterrett, Captain George E Mack, Robert Bowie Warind, (author’s brother). Also General Johnson and Major Harding advised author’s brother to go home to school. Hon. Reverend Johnson, Governor Robert Bowie tried to get author’s brother home. Drs. Mackubbin and Skinner are mentioned. Sisters of the author are Mrs. Duckett, Priscilla and Alice. Also mentioned are; friend Emma Biscoe, George Chew, Walter Bowie and Mr. Hume. Hand copied account entitled “ Daring Exploit and Murder of Lieutenant Walter Bowie, Copied from Scrapbook”. This discusses account of the Bowie family identified in folder number 4. Most likely after September 1863. Letter is signed by Allen Bowie and mentions Colonel Mosby, the younger Bowie brother. Places named; Port Tobacco, Sandy Springs, Washington, Brookville, Stanley’s Church in Prince Georges County.

“A Cattle Raid” St Petersburg VA 1864. Author discusses skirmish or battle near Petersburg initiated by a cattle raid on the Union Army. Involved are General Grant and General Lee, the Tenth Georgia Regiment, and Company A stationed at Sycamore Church near plantation of Edmund Ruffin. One sergeant named Henry Harris, discovered large number of cattle near where Grant was camped and reported that to General Wade Hampton and General Lee. Also mentioned are General Rosser, Deerings’ Brigade, Greggs Division of Federal Calvary, Young’s Brigade, Sixth South Carolina Calvary, and the Calvary of the District of Columbia..

Mrs. Charles K. Clairborne, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, reminiscences about war and her experiences bringing her brother home. Her brothers volunteered, one was in 1st S.C. Sharpshooters in April 1861. She discusses experiences bringing home her brother who was wounded in second battle of Manassas September 1862. General Winder is involved. Places named are; Culpepper, Richmond, Gordonville, Rapidan River, Warrington, Spartanburg Female College. She mentions men from Baltimore, as well as William Bonner, Catherine Williamson, Mr. Payne the Warrington Town Marshall, and Jack Bishop.

Letter, George Savage to Mrs. Thomas B. Graham, "account of the first meeting between George H. McClellan and Robert E. Lee during the Mexican War" First meeting between Generals Lee and McClellan as interpreted by George Savage through Mrs. Thomas Gresham of Baltimore for the Daughters of the Confederacy on May 19, 1896. This a second copy, typed. Mr. Savage indicated he had first copy. Dated May 2,1896. Mr. Thomas met McClellan in 1876 and they discussed the war, and his first encounter with Lee.
