Description
Correspondence in this file is concerned primarily with the health and welfare of infants and children. Correspondents include the Health Editor for The Delineator, the Children's Bureau at the U. S. Department of Labor, the National Child Labor Committee, Women's Section of the Maryland Council of Defense, Better Babies Bureau at the Woman's Home Companion, The Crowell Publishing Company, Women's Civic League, Alliance of Charitable and Social Agencies, and the National Child Labor Committee. While much of the correspondence covers the availability of literature and information on pediatric health and nutrition, there is also a request for support for congressional bills regulating child labor, pledge for children to sign showing their patriotism, forms and charts for reporting children's height and weight, a pamphlet soliciting donations, a request to attend a meeting of rural teachers, statistics on use of milk, as well as a response to a request for a visit to a local family to check the welfare of the children. S. Department of Agriculture. The correspondence includes such topics as visits of County Agents, controlling plant infestations, arrangements for meetings and meeting topics, funding for the position of home demonstrator for Worcester County, food shortages, and instructions to state and county Home Demonstration Agents. Folder contents also include a business card from the Assistant Forester for the Maryland State Board of Forestry at Johns Hopkins University as well as by-laws for the Hog Growers Association. In addition there are letters from the following Red Cross Organizations: Home Service Section in Snow Hill, Potomac Division, Bureau of Home Service Education of the Potomac Division, and Worcester County Chapter. The letters are primarily concerned with life insurance and compensation for service men, recruitment and work with American Red Cross' Civilian Relief and Home Service. This file contains instructions for recruiting agents for the U. S. Student Nurse Reserve as well as enrollment in the reserve provided by the Woman's Committee of Council of National Defense. In addition, there are letters of information and forms relating to elementary instruction classes for care of the sick from the American Red Cross. Finally, a form letter from Edith Kermit Roosevelt requesting Rozelle Handy organized a branch of the Needlework Guild. There are also several two-cent postcards.

Letters discuss the organization of workers at the local level, organizing new committees and patriotic meetings, suggestions of possible committee members and replacements for departing members, requests for reports as well as specific information to include in reports, posting information, advertising meetings, arrangements for speakers, notification a visits by state representative, health of family members, canceling meetings due to influenza outbreak, and filling the position of County Nurse. An unsigned letter does mention the number of babies and young children weighed in Pocomoke City. This section of Rozelle Handy’s letter box also contained a letter from Lanta Smack.

This file contains unfiled items found in this letter box. Included in this file is a pamphlet from Le Bien-Être du Blessé, a letter and accompanying pamphlet from The Board of Sunday Schools of the Methodist Episcopal Church on the Red Cross, a pamphlet from National Child Labor Committee, a letter from the World Trade Club promoting the conversion to a metric system for weights and measures, and an index card listing expenses for Council of Defense. In addition there are letters from Maryland Council of Defense, Women’s Section thanking for Miss Handy for her efforts. Miss Handy’s establishment of the Friendly Library as a means of patriotic education is commented on favorably in a letter from the Maryland Council of Defense, Women’s Section. Also included in this file are blank, addressed postcards from Miss Lucy Walker, Emergency Home Demonstration Agent.
